Hour 3. Okay I'm starting to get bored here and according to my DVR I have two more hours to go.
We begin with an Adele and Sugarland double header. First Sugarland performing an acoustic "Stay". I feel like this song would have sounded better with a full band rather than just an acoustic guitar. She sounds like she's just on the verge of over singing, especially towards the bridge (and now that I've said that, the recorded version will have been acoustic as well I'm sure). When there song is over, we cut to Adele performing "Chasing Pavements". I have a soft spot for Adele and this song, so she can go no wrong as far as I'm concerned. Sugarland join in for the end of the song and I'll be honest: I was digging it.
Radiohead perform next. This is a band that I have just never been able to get into, no matter how hard I try. Thom Yorke slurs his words a bit so it can be hard to understand what he's saying, but he's backed by a full on marching band and the way he whips the mic over his shoulder displays more "swagga" than any other performer tonight. There is something just captivating about watching this set...there aren't any strobes or anything theatrical, just Thom, a guitarist and a marching band, yet it is still one of the more memorable performances of the night.
And now, for another first! It's a night of firsts here on the Grammys! Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus! No Awards! and now: Justin Timberlake and TI! The first time I watched this, I couldn't tell what made this song any different than any other R&B Crooner/Rapper collaboration. After re-watching it, I liked it a bit better but still don't see what makes it any different than say Ludacris and Mary J. Blige's "Run Away Love" from last year (aside from y'know, having more people sitting on staircases hitting plastic buckets with drum sticks). Also, why is Justin Timberlake wearing a winter coat? Is it cold in L.A? Colder than New England in winter?
Smoky Robinson teams up with NeYo and Jamie Foxx to revive the Four Tops in a Motown medley. It....really is what it sounds like. Nothing else to say about it, really.
I KNOW I am not qualified to comment on a Neil Diamond performance, so all I'll say is: Neil Diamond performs "Sweet Caroline" and yes, Josh Groban, I was singing along at home. Go Sox
After the In Memoriam montage, John Mayer, BBKing, Keith Urban perform. I think it was supposed to be a tribute to all the people in the industry who passed away in the past year (they started with a Bo Diddly song). How it came across to me was a chance for these guys to show off their "mad guitar skillz". Not saying they're not talented. Just saying...y'know.
