Grammy Awards Hour 2

Hour 2! Whoo Hoo!

Jenifer Hudson kicks off our second hour (complete with Gospel Choir!). I don't really know much about her except she's an American Idol alum and was in the movie DreamGirls. I can't really say I care for the song she sings, but I can appreciate the strength and emotion in her voice (I got chills). Next up: the JoBros and Stevie Wonder. It's....messy. Good, but messy. The JoBros are always moving all over the stage, Kevin (?) stands right in front of the camera, blocking what should have been a shot of Stevie, and Nick stumbles over his line during "Very Superstitious". Even so, everyone looks like they're having the best night of their lives. Their energy and enthusiasm makes up for the messy performance.

I have to stop here and comment on Blink-182 who are introduced next to present the next award. They use the stage to announce they are reuniting. The announcement was along the lines of: "Blink-182 are back." :cricket: Wow, such conviction guys.

Katy Perry is up next performing "I Kissed A Girl". Okay, I can't even pretend to be objective here. I can't stand this song and I can't stand her. She descends to the stage in a giant banana and proceeds to bounce around the stage dressed as the Chiquita Banana Lady. One thing she has going for her is she's doing her own singing. Unfortunately when she's not shouting the words at the audience she sounds like a bleating sheep. From there, we move to Kanye West at the small stage in the middle of the crowd for his duet with Estelle. Is he growing a mullet? She's very obviously not singing during the chorus and he steals the show with his rapping. The whole thing is just a set up for them to present the next award.

After the break, Morgan Freeman introduces Kenney Chesney and his guitar. I have the same problem with this performance as I did with Justin Timberlake et. al from the last hour: there is absolutely nothing wrong with the act, I just find it very forgettable.

And now, the moment the Grammy ads have been touting all month long: Jay-Z, TI, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and MIA performing "Swagga Like Us"! The commercials have been touting this performance as the end all, be all performance of the year. In all honesty, the first time I watched these guys perform, I thought it was sloppy. After watching it again....I still think it's sloppy. I'll chalk it up to just not being into rap. MIA starts out with a few lines from "Paper Planes" and then after claiming that "no one on the corner has swagga like us" (confession time: up until now I thought the line was "no one on the corner has crack like us"....which fits, right?) the menfolk come out trading lines while MIA weaves her line in and out (maybe? jury is still out but it sounds a bit pre-recorded to me). I spent half the performance wondering if it was supposed to be shot in black-and-white or if there was a problem with my feed and the other half wishing we could have gotten more "Paper Planes". Oh well. The audience loved it.

Hour 2 Ends with Sir Paul McCartney performing Beatles songs with Dave Grohl on drums. Dave seems to be enjoying himself throughout. I feel like I should practice drums on Rock Band more so I can head bang the way he does whilst playing. I've got nothing else to say, really. There's nothing horribly bad about it.
